FIRST Tech Challenge competition robotics teams for students in grades 7–12 at UP Robotics in Bethesda, MD.

FIRST Tech Challenge is the closest UP Robotics pathway to a real engineering team. Students design a full-size metal robot, program in Java, develop game strategy, document their process, and compete in alliance-based matches at regional events.

What team members do
- Design and fabricate mechanisms for a competition-grade metal robot.
- Program autonomous and driver-controlled behavior in Java.
- Integrate motors, servos, sensors, electronics, and control systems.
- Analyze matches and develop alliance strategy.
- Maintain an engineering portfolio and prepare for judging.
- Take ownership of technical and non-technical roles across the season.
Who is ready for FTC?
FTC works best for students prepared for longer practices, more complex systems, shared deadlines, and sustained problem-solving. Prior FLL, VEX IQ, robotics-class, coding, CAD, or maker experience is useful, but placement considers the whole student rather than one prerequisite.

The first step is a placement conversation. We will discuss experience, interests, schedule compatibility, and current openings before assigning a roster.

Frequently asked questions
Does every student have to program in Java?
Teams need programmers, but they also need mechanical designers, builders, drivers, strategists, documenters, and presenters. Students often grow across several roles.
How large is the time commitment?
The regular schedule is two practices each week, generally 2.5–3 hours each, plus competition events and occasional season-dependent work.
Is FTC only for students planning an engineering career?
No. FTC develops collaboration, project management, communication, resilience, and technical confidence alongside engineering skills.
